IBM Will Launch Delivery Service for Working Mothers to Send Their Breast Milk Home

IBM Will Launch Delivery Service for Working Mothers to Send Their Breast Milk Home

The program is designed to give women a better sense of balance between work and home

‘As long as it appeals to a segment of our population… we will continue it.”

IBM, the multinational technology company, will soon launch a service that will allow new mothers in its employ to send their breast milk home when they are traveling on business, the company has announced.

The innovative new system, which will allow the milk to be delivered in temperature-controlled packaging, is meant to help the company retain its valuable female workforce even as those employees start families and take on new responsibilities. IBM says that while it doesn’t yet have a sense of the program’s utility, it will remain available as long as employees find it useful.

“We are going to experiment with this and see how many women are interested,” said Barbara Brickmeier, vice president of benefits at IBM. “As long as it appeals to a segment of our population and they feel that they can better balance their work and home, we will continue it.”

Some of us spend days or weeks trying to pump and freeze enough milk to cover any time away. Now tech giant IBM has announced plans to offer a breastmilk shipping service for travelling mums. Genius idea to revolutionise life for breastfeeding working women? Or might it add additional pressure to be away from our babies for longer?

The multi-national company announced their plans in an interview with Fortune.com, saying that in future, they hope that mums will be able to send milk home when on business trips, rather than 'pump and dump'.

The IT company plans to experiment with the scheme and see how many women are interested.

Barbara Brickmeier, vice president of benefits at IBM, said:

"As long as it appeals to a segment of our population and they feel that they can better balance their work and home, we will continue it."

      • Gently warm the breast milk by placing the feeding bottle in a bowl of warm water or place it under warm running water.
        • Do not thaw or heat breast milk in a microwave as it will destroy the nutrients in the breast milk and can burn your baby's mouth while feeding.
          • Swirl the milk bottle to mix the fat, which may have separated.
            • Use breast milk within 24 hours of thawing it in the fridge. This means 24 hours from when the breast milk is no more frozen, not from the time when you take it out of the freezer.
              • Use breast milk within two hours once it has been thawed.
                • Do not refreeze breast milk that has been defrosted.

Mothers of Ireland: Do you know how much breastmilk is worth?

Everyone’s talking about the cows while celebrating the lifting of the quota, making farmers free to produce as much milk as they like for the first time in 31 years. 20 per cent of this will be made into infant formula with the Chinese market being targeted.

Ireland produces 15 per cent of the world’s supply of infant formula, feeding one in seven of the world’s babies. Yet mother’s milk is worth considerably more than cows’ milk - up to $2.50 per ounce in the US on the many websites set up for the selling, donating and purchasing of breastmilk. And there’s never been a quota. You can produce as much as you like. In China, the super-rich are paying thousands of euro per month for frozen breastmilk.

In the US, where the trend took off, a lactating woman who is no longer feeding her own children can profit. Sales of breastmilk are booming as mothers who are either unable to breastfeed, or too busy, want to buy the best food for their babies. With a six-month old infant requiring 30 oz per day at $2.50 per ounce, that’s a tidy profit of $65 per day for a mother producing 30oz daily. (If you’re interested, you freeze it in bags and sell it online at sites such as onlythebreast.com)

Some women do make more milk than their own babies need. At the Coombe Hospital, a friend recalls, there was a mother going around producing so much nourishment that she was offering it enthusiastically to others who were having difficulty. And why not?

Breastfed babies are said to have higher IQs, fewer allergies, protection from diabetes, eczema, gastrointestinal disease plus a host of other advantages. The research proves it. The WHO recommends that mothers breastfeed for the first two years. This isn’t convenient for economically booming countries like China who want mothers in the workforce, nor for Ireland where six out of ten women believe they “can’t” breastfeed, despite their Irish breasts (one photographer of nudes informs us) being the most ample in the world.

If every Irish mother of a nursing infant (there are 72,000 of you) were producing a mere eight extra ounces per day, that would be a daily profit of millions, although the Government would probably tax it.

Imagine what the upwardly mobile Chinese will pay for it, when they’re willing to spend €50 on a can of infant formula produced in an Irish factory. The wealthiest Chinese are already paying more than €2,000 per month for breast milk and even advertising for wet-nurses.

Yet despite all the nourishment, health value and sheer human beauty in Irish women’s lactating breasts, Ireland’s baby formula production sector is growing at up to 6 per cent a year.

Promoting breastfeeding isn’t convenient for the food sector. Irish maternity hospitals give infant formula away for free. It’s akin to heads of state and celebrities having a pint of Guinness put in their gob the moment they arrive here. “Welcome to the world of processed food, baby, now we’ve got you for life” seems to be the marketing approach.

All mothers want the best for their babies, so if like six out of ten Irish women you are choosing not to breastfeed (Irish women have the lowest breastfedding rate in Europe, by the way) you could purchase mother’s milk from other mothers. It’s a market just waiting to be milked. Currently, some Irish mothers donate their milk to the Milk Bank at Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh, which provides breast milk for more than 5,500 premature and sick babies who need the real thing in order to thrive, on both sides of the border.

It’s ironic, that the Irish dairy industry with its green credentials – bolstered by Bord Bia’s Origin Green project – promotes its dairy products as prestige brands, while the most valuable, sustainable and green milk product of all – breastmilk – lacks prestige amongst Irish mothers. Could this be because it’s free? Or because the infant formula advertising is so clever?

Three of the world’s largest infant formula manufacturers have extensive operations in Ireland. Glanbia Ingredients has just spent €235 million on a new Belview plant – the biggest Irish company investment in 80 years – to produce specialised milk powder products, much of it for infant formula with the 70 million infants aged 0-3 in China as a target. At the launch, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny was photographed feeding a baby with formula, reinforcing the message that lucrative baby formula is the way to go.

By 2020, Glanbia’s 4,800 milk supplies will have increased milk production by 63 per cent with many of its products selling to 50 countries, many in the Third World, where mothers will be purchasing what they could give their babies for free. Up to 15 per cent of deaths in children under five are caused by mothers not exclusively breastfeeding in the first six months of life in developing countries, says the WHO.

There are few things as profitable as selling mothers a product they don’t actually need. So if you enjoy breastfeeding, which is actually very pleasant once you get the hang of it after those first few difficult weeks, your breasts are your factory for spreading a truly green and sustainable product.

Charities tussle with for-profits over breast milk

Many moms donate breast milk for altruistic reasons, but the business is emerging as a surprisingly cutthroat industry.

TRENTON, N.J. — It could trade for 400 times more than the price of crude oil and 2,000 times more than iron ore. If sold off the shelf, it could cost more than 150 times the price of a gallon of cow’s milk and 15 times more than coffee.

Going for as much as $4 per ounce, breast milk is a hot commodity that is emerging as a surprisingly cutthroat industry, one that states are seeking to regulate amid a battle for control between nonprofit and for-profit banks that supply hospital neonatal units.

The debate among the for-profit and nonprofit organizations can be sharp-elbowed. It centers on whose processes result in the safest milk for premature babies in neonatal intensive care units who need the milk if a mother has difficulty producing enough or the child has trouble latching. Each side claims the moral high ground, with nonprofits generally saying milk distribution should be altruistic and for-profit companies arguing mothers deserve to be compensated.

In the United States, there are two for-profit companies and soon to be three, and one nonprofit that oversees 15 milk banks in the U.S. in addition to three in Canada. Ten nonprofit banks are in development. Against this backdrop, lawmakers in New Jersey and Michigan are considering legislation to license banks, while legislators in California, Maryland, New York and Texas already have regulations.

Mothers have long had far from a monolithic view on the question of milk banking, but what’s changing is the availability of more options as the industry matures. For some, the work involved in cleaning bottle parts and in pumping and storing their milk warrants being paid. Others view donating their milk, considered superior to formula in nutrition and immunity-building qualities, as a charitable service.

“You just never know who it’s going to,” said Kelli Russell, of Washington, North Carolina, who donates her breast milk. “It could go to someone who could someday cure cancer or it could be someone that marries my son or takes care of me if I need help one day if I’m in the hospital.”

Rachel Palencik, of West Chester, Pennsylvania, said her breast milk was taking up space in her freezer, so she tried to donate it to a bank but didn’t have enough. So she tried to sell it – and wouldn’t try it again.

“A lot of it was either scammers or men wanting to consume it, which isn’t my cup of tea,” she said. So she ended up donating to an individual mother rather than through a bank.

There’s broad agreement in the milk-banking industry of a shortage of human milk available for hospitals and NICUs. The nonprofit Human Milk Banking Association of North America estimates that there are 4,000 moms using its banks across the country and that it would take 60,000 to meet the demand for milk in hospitals nationwide.

There is also a largely shared view that it’s important for donor milk to be thoroughly screened for bacteria, drugs and adulteration by cow’s milk.

But the agreement largely stops there.

                THE ARGUMENT FOR ALTRUISM

The nonprofits say they respect the right of moms to sell their milk because it is theirs, but they question the profit motives of companies like Medolac, Prolacta and the soon-to-be-operational International Milk Bank.

“I don’t know if you want the market influenced. You want the market served,” said John Honaman, executive director of the nonprofit Human Milk Banking Association of North America. He said he worries the for-profit banks draw potential donors away from association milk banks, which is a problem because he believes a spirit of altruism should govern the industry.

The for-profit companies offer moms the chance to earn $1 an ounce to $2.50 an ounce for their milk. (Only the Breast, a for-profit marketplace, can offer $2.50 an ounce but does not directly pay the women, just connects them with paying clients.) In turn, hospitals can pay $4 an ounce.

THE ARGUMENT FOR PAY AND PROFIT

The companies say that mothers have a right to earn money for their milk and that their model can end the shortage.

Glenn Snow, co-founder of Only the Breast, is about to launch the International Milk Bank, which will link the network of 49,000 members and 65 million ounces of milk within the Only the Breast network with the new for-profit bank.

“We’re bringing a massive supply to market,” Snow said. “We’re going to save a lot of babies’ lives.”

The competition also centers on how the milk is processed, which is important to reduce contamination. Medolac, for example, highlights that it uses a sterilization process that kills potential contaminants and also allows the milk to be stored at room temperature. Nonprofits use a pasteurization method and then freeze the milk before it’s shipped to hospitals, according to the nonprofit milk banking association.

Others, such as Prolacta, specialize in the manufacture of human milk fortifiers, sometimes needed to boost the nutrients in milk intended for premature babies.

Michigan is considering requiring for-profits to abide by nonprofit standards. Other states, like New York, have detailed regulations that govern donor qualifications and storage and collection protocols, along with rules requiring records to be kept.
